Software Engineering Internship Resume

A software engineering internship resume is only a short document that outlines your related qualifications, training and experience pertinent to a software engineering position. Like a job applicant, aim to create a two-page resume. Unlike a job applicant, however, engineering graduates typically have years of practical work behind them. Often they are not fresh out of school and don’t know the first thing about how to create a great resume. Don’t worry, this problem is easily solved.

First, note that you should not repeat all of the skills you have obtained over the years. Instead, list the most recent skills you’ve acquired under each of the functional categories. For example, if you’re a Java expert with 5 years of programming experience, list your skill set under “Programming/Development Expertise.” Don’t list everything you know about computer architecture or Java, though. Instead, focus on your most recent programming skills, such as the ones listed under “Information Technology” and “Java.”

The next step is to create your software engineering internship resume. Use a large, bold font to draw attention to your most recent skills and accomplishments, and use a secondary color for each of your skills groupings. For example, you might highlight your recent proficiency in C++ by creating a second color called “C++”. Be sure to indicate your primary objective statement (listing your major area of concentration) in the field of study that you are studying in addition to your list of skills and awards.

One of the biggest mistakes job applicants make when writing their resumes is covering up their lack of skills with their mastery of technology terminology and tools. Make sure that your software engineering internship resume lists your technical familiarity with various computer programs, platforms, languages, and documentation. At the end of the day, if your potential employer wants to see your technical proficiency, he or she will want to see your familiarity with the latest jargon in the industry. In the end, the hiring manager will look for someone who has demonstrated a genuine ability to grasp new knowledge and use it to solve problems.

If you are not sure how to put your relevant skills on your resume, consider taking a class related to the job you are applying for. Some software engineering internships have a job requirement for each candidate, and it is often required that candidates take a class related to the job they wish to apply for. This can help ensure that you have some real “skills” related to the position! If you are still uncertain about which class would best fit your needs, contact your Human Resources Department to see what classes they recommend. This may help you decide exactly what specific skills to put on your resume.

Another very important part of your software engineering internship resume / CV is your “education.” This indicates that you either took a course at an accredited college or university, or you were a graduate student who enrolled in a program related to the one you are applying for. For example, if you were a recent graduate student of Computer Systems Engineering, you might put that on your resume as an educational experience. For general studies, however, it is usually appropriate to list all of your degrees, regardless of whether they were related to computer science, math, or any other area.
