In many classrooms today, teachers have several resources at their disposal to make teaching 1st grade measurement charts fun and engaging. A good example is using vinyl stickers that have different pictures on them. When students are asked to write down their measurements, they can simply take off one of the stickers, read the definition, and write it down in the corresponding place on the chart. This exercise is fun, interesting, and helps to reinforce the ideas being taught in the lesson.

Another fun way to use 1st grade measurement worksheets is to create a “guessing game.” Have your students divide themselves into two teams. Each team will be given a piece of paper with an idea of a measurement. On that piece of paper, have written two smaller writing pads on the sides. On the pads, have written two small circles, approximately the size of the pointer on a calculator.

The first group of students will be asked to guess what the measurement is. (It doesn’t really matter what the measurement is, as long as it is measurable.) After the guessing has been finished, the second group will have their turn. For this game, have each student write the number on their pad – along with the name of the person who came up with the measurement – if they guess correctly. Then, the next group will get the same question, but this time, they must provide the name of the person who came up with the measurement in addition to the number that has been written on the pad.

As a rule, the more students guess incorrectly, the more points are earned for that student. The goal, however, is not to award points because students have to guess correctly – it is to motivate them to come up with a guess. Once the students guess correctly, the teacher must decide whether or not he or she wants to let them come back and try again or to give points for guessing correctly and then telling the exact number as well. Many teachers give points for guessing in general, but students can earn points for coming up with a number even if they guess wrong.
